Arrows

Archery Arrows — Get the Right Shaft and Everything Else Falls Into Place

Most people spend a long time choosing their bow and about five minutes choosing their arrows. That's usually a mistake. The arrow is half the equation — and the wrong arrow for your setup will undermine accuracy regardless of how well the bow performs. Get it right, and everything clicks.

Why arrow choice actually matters

An arrow that's too stiff or too weak for your draw weight won't fly true. It'll fishtail, drop unpredictably, or group inconsistently in ways that are easy to misdiagnose as a technique problem. Spine rating — the measure of an arrow's flex — has to match your setup. It's not optional, and it's not something you can eyeball.

Beyond spine, the material changes how the arrow behaves in the air and how long it lasts. Carbon arrows are the most popular choice for good reason: they're light, fast, consistent, and durable enough for regular use. Aluminium arrows are heavier but fly a flatter trajectory at shorter distances and tend to be more forgiving for beginners still refining their release. Wooden arrows belong in the traditional and barebow category — they're the right choice for a longbow or a traditional recurve, where the aesthetic and the feel are part of why you're shooting.

What to think about before you buy

Start with your draw weight and draw length — most arrow manufacturers publish spine charts that match those numbers to the correct shaft. If you're unsure, err toward asking rather than guessing. A mismatched arrow is a wasted arrow.

Arrow length matters too. Too short and you risk the arrow coming off the rest; too long and you're carrying unnecessary weight. As a rule, your arrow should extend at least an inch beyond the rest at full draw.

Point weight affects both trajectory and penetration. Field points are standard for target practice. Broadheads are for hunting and require their own setup considerations. If you're buying arrows primarily for range use, field points are what you want and are what most arrows come fitted with.

Fletching — the vanes or feathers at the back — affects stabilisation in flight. Plastic vanes are more durable and weather-resistant; feather fletching is lighter and more forgiving with finger shooting styles, which is why traditional archers tend to prefer them.
